“Life without Principle" is an essay written by Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862). First published in 1856, it offers his ethical principles for a righteous livelihood.

The ebook also contains a biographical profile of Thoreau written by Archibald MacMechan (1862-1933) in 1918.

This book helped me better understand H.D ideals, especially independence of mind and not swaying with the winds of the times. And I got a glimpse into his minimalism ideals, sharply capture by “I do believe in simplicity. When the mathematician would solve a difficult problem, he first frees the equation from all encumbrances, and reduces it to its simplest terms. So simplify the problem of life, distinguish the necessary and the real.”

Concise book, & even more relevant for our times - I recommend.

What can i say about Thoreau, except read all his works, especially WALK and this one.
WALK is for wandering souls like me.
thank you
Reminds me of the first Thoreau book I have read in high school decades ago - Waden Pond. Very good reflection guidline. Should be a "must" reading for all politicians.
This book talks about the laws and set ideas that make this country function, but are not conducive to benefit everyone, for example, he prefers to go to jail then to pay taxes. The writer offers the Constitution as laws set in the name of God, and fail a group of people, such as slavery.
If you are a fan of Thoreau then this is a must read. Most people have only read Life in the Wood (Walden), if they have read Thoreau at all, and this is sad as the author has a lot of wisdom to share that is still pertinent to this day.
The conversion from paper to digital has put a hard return after every line. So the essay looks like a poem, with a paragraph every 10 words or so.

Besides, Thoreau's presents a sophomoric thesis, which boils down roughly to this "Commerce and politics - and even interest in commerce and politics - are soulless and debasing activities that dehumanize almost everyone." I write this as an admirer of Thoreau. He is a great stylist and thinker in other realms, but he has given little thought to problems of economics, scarcity, or poverty. Worse, and ironically, he puts a cramped view of human inspiration on display in this essay.
A fine and justyly famous lecture by Thoreau which encapsulates many of the same themes expressed more fuly in Walden.
